Not until the seventh overtime of the seventh game of the seventh playoff series will a Ranger fan ever be able to rest easy that a win is in the bag. Not when you add last night’s incomprehensible third period…

Torched in Toronto
On A Clear Day…
Okay, so I got a little angry and emotional after last night’s game. I cry when I read Yeats. So sue me, sue me what can you do me. Despite the fact that the clocks went back last night, I got a little less sleep then usual. I haven’t been getting more then six hours a [...]

KUBINA LIFTS LEAFS TO THIRD-PERIOD COMEBACK
TORONTO - They’d been living on the edge all season, so it’s not all that surprising that the Rangers finally fell off. It is, however, shocking the way they melted under the tiniest bit of adversity late in the third period of a game they seemed…

Maple Leafs erupt for five quick goals, beat Rangers 5-2
When you look back on the final score, it won’t look like a close game, not after the Maple Leafs blitzed their way out of a two-goal late-third-period hole by scoring a stunning five times in a span of just 5:21 to hand the Rangers a 5-2 loss.
Like You Couldn’t See This Coming
The Ranger’s disgraceful powerplay is the reason they lost this total embarrassment of a game in Toronto. The Rangers had a 2-0 lead and a powerplay with 8 minutes left in the game. All they had to do was put the puck in the net and they would have gone up 3-0. Now, once again, the Rangers are [...]
Pre-game notes: Rangers at Leafs
Greetings from Toronto - or, more specifically, from The Foster Hewitt Media Gondola overlooking the Air Canada Centre ice. Here in the FHMG at the ACC, you sit about a half-mile or so above the rink, but straight in front of you, at eye level, staring at you, are great Maple Leafs past, their portraits drawn on the banners marking their retired numbers. On my end of the rink is: 5 Barilko, 1 Bower, 4 Kelly, 7 Horton (donut anyone? Pull up to the window), 9 Kennedy, 10 Armstrong, 21 Salming, 27 Sittler. Great players, for sure, but are they just gonna stare like that the whole game?
Line changes for the Rangers: The red-hot Nikolai Zherdev is on the move, reuniting with Brandon Dubinsky and Aaron Voros, a line that began the season together having good success. Dan Fritsche slots in next to Chris Drury and Markus Naslund. Everyone else stays put, including Petr Prucha, who watches from the seats.
Renney on moving Zherdev: “It depends on your opponent most nights. We want to make sure we can come at Toronto with a couple of different points of view, couple different attack looks, if you will. That line has been able to provide that earlier in the season, and give our opponents something to think about. So that as much as anything is the reason for that move.”
As for the power play, Renney said no personnel changes would be in place at the start, but that “we’ll see how it goes, how our start is, and how we’re moving the puck and how assertive we are with our extra-man advantage, and take it from there.
“I’ve always got bullets in the chamber,” he said.
Lastly, Steve Valiquette in goal for another start against the Leafs after shutting them out in a 1-0 shootout win on Oct. 17. The Etobicoke, Ontario product is 3-0 with a 1.29 GAA and.950 save percentage against Toronto. In the other goal is Vesa Toskala, who also shut the Rangers out on Oct. 17 before losing in the shootout.
It takes a while to walk around this rink, because you get caught up taking long looks at all the wonderful photographs of old those old Leafs in action in what looks like a high school gymnasium but has to be Maple Leaf Gardens (interspersed with photos of Marcus Camby in those way-back-when days of Raptors basketball). I think my favorite is the shot of Punch Imlach sitting back in his chair, sipping champagne, with his feet and the Stanley Cup on the desk in front of him, and a chalkboard on the wall behind him: “No practice tomorrow.”
Signs around the rink proclaim that the 2008-09 Toronto Maple Leafs season is proudly sponsored by Bank of Montreal. In a related story, the 2009 Yankees season will be brought to you by Boston Market.
