SO, WHERE to begin with a power play that was ranked 29th overall in the NHL and doesn’t appear to have appreciably improved thus far over the summer, unless you think Marian Gaborik will solve all ills all by himself? “The power play starts…

Sully back at Torts’ side
Okay, Jim Schoenfeld, you’re off the hook. The Rangers today named Mike Sullivan their assistant coach, a move that was both long expected and may round out John Tortorella’s coaching staff with one stroke of the pen.
Sullivan has spent the last two seasons as a Lightning assistant, the first under Tortorella in 2007-08 before Barry Melrose took over for a couple weeks. The Marshfield, Mass. product - a fourth-round draft pick of the Rangers’ in 1987 who played 709 NHL games but none in a Blueshirt - also was head coach of the Boston Bruins for two seasons bookending the lockout; in 2003-04, he led the B’s to a 41-19-15 record and a division title, though they lost to Montreal in seven games in the first round. In 2005-06, they missed the playoffs. Sullivan also was an assistant coach for the U.S. men’s team at the 2006 Turin Games and head coach at the 2007 world championships.
It’s possible but unlikely that Tortorella will add another assistant to his bench before the Oct. 2 opener. Goaltending coach Benoit Allaire remains the other assistant - his goalies love him and Torts professes to “know nothing about goaltending.” Allaire sits upstairs during games and is not behind the bench (in some of the more cramped press boxes, he has to sit next to me. Which means I know everything there is to know about goaltending).
Since the Rangers found it unfeasible to bring Sullivan in for the final two months of last season after Tom Renney was let go, Schoenfeld, the assistant GM, stepped in as a stopgap assistant coach and even served as head coach for a playoff game after Torts brought Watergate back to Washington.
Sullivan is the new assistant
As expected (sorry for the delay, we had technical problems apparently).
